The new 6-Series coupe sports a number of firsts, including adaptive LED headlights and B&O sound system, but its aesthetically pleasing looks may be the most welcome addition.

In brief

Ever since BMW relaunched its big coupe in 2003, fans of the brand had to cover their eyes when walking around the rear of the car. That's because the reborn 6-Series lacked the shark-like style of the original, produced from the late ‘70s all the way through to the ‘80s.

But the new generation 650i, just revealed in new photos from BMW, shows a car with a de-emphasised boot lip. And while it's not an exact return to the original style, it's much less offensive. With its gracefully sloping rear roofline, you can actually say that this car looks good.

In addition to an iDrive entertainment and nav system, surround view parking assistance, head-up display and dynamic speed limit info, the cabin also gets an optional Bang & Olufsen audio system, the first time BMW has worked with the Danish audio brand. This system features 16 speakers and B&O's acoustic lens technology. Another high-tech first is the availability of adaptive LED headlights.

Given BMW's high-tech engineering, it should certainly be an impressive driver. Under the bonnet is a twin-turbo direct-injection 4.4-litre V8, a petrol engine that pumps out a frightening amount of torque - 600Nm at a mere 1750rpm. Power is rated at 300kW. A model (badged as the 640i) is also available with the company's 235kW/450Nm turbocharged 3-litre six-cylinder engine.

An eight-speed automatic transmission is likely to be the only transmission available in Australia, as the six-speed manual will likely prove uneconomic for our small market.

BMW's high-tech suspension includes automatic damping control, adjustable between Comfort, Normal, Sport and Sport+ settings. Optional technology includes active roll control and BMW's active steering.

Audi A3 concept
Unlike the current A3, which has hatchback and convertible variants, Audi designed the A3 concept as a sedan, hinting at a future model fitting below the A4. This car showcases a variety of refined Audi technologies and styling. Notably, the one-piece grille is more prominent than ever and flanked by LED headlights.">

BMW Vision ConnectedDrive
BMW's roadster concept is really more about the electronics than traditional design or motive power. Vision ConnectedDrive integrates three driving modes, which BMW calls safety, infotainment and environment. Each state uses lighting effects to signal its presence. Orange signifies safety and is denoted here by the lighting effects in the bonnet, which direct the driver's attention to the road.">

Giugiaro Tex
Volkswagen recently acquired Italdesign Giugiaro, which promptly designed two concepts for the company. The first, Tex, shows an idea for future Volkswagen sports cars. Its hybrid system uses a combination of a turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine and an 85kW electric motor. Tex can also hit 100km/h in about six seconds and also has an electric range of about 30km.">

Smart ForSpeed
Smart attempts to shed some of its utilitarian image with the ForSpeed concept. Starting from the basic two-seater ForTwo platform, Smart gives the body a more raked appearance and an open top. Roll bars are moulded into the bodywork behind each seat.">

Toyota EV Prototype
A 47kW motor sits up front, getting power from an 11kWh Lithium-ion battery pack under the floorboards of the car. Its performance numbers are not that impressive, taking 14 seconds to hit 100km/h and only having a range of about 105km. It takes four hours to charge from a 200V source.">

Rolls-Royce 102EX
Rolls-Royce is not known for worrying about fuel economy, but with the 102EX, the company is trying out an electric powertrain in a full-fledged Phantom sedan. That's almost 2.7 tonnes of car with a length of around 5.8m. And Rolls-Royce does not plan on compromising luxury.">

Rolls-Royce 102EX
Rolls-Royce says the 102EX has the largest battery pack ever placed in a passenger car. This pack uses 96 Lithium-ion pouches and drives two electric motors at the rear wheels. The total power of this system is 290kW. That gives the 102EX a range of 200km and a zero to 100km/h time of around eight seconds.">

Alfa Romeo 4C
Alfa Romeo designs great-looking cars and the 4C concept is no exception. For this concept, Alfa Romeo wanted to provide all the performance of its 8C Competizione in a more economical package. With its turbocharged direct injection 1.75-litre four-cylinder, the 4C does just that, getting to 100km/h in under five seconds.">

Rinspeed Bamboo
Rinspeed, a Swiss tuner company, always brings unique concepts to the Geneva show. This year's entrant, meant to look like a 1950s beach vehicle, is kind of dorky.

The two titans of the supercar scene unveiled new range-topping models. We were on hand at Geneva to check them out.

Scales of awesome
With its carbon fibre body, the Agera R weighs 1420kg. Its aerodynamic gear adds 300kg of downforce to the weight at 250km/h.">

Electric hippie, part II
Volkswagen claims impressive numbers for the drivetrain, such as the 300km range and a one-hour charging time.">

Apple power
Volkswagen ditches the excellent RNS510 system for an integrated iPad, complete with a mount, that handles all the entertainment and navigation functions.">
<img src="http://cdn.cbsi.com.au/story_media/339310566/60x45/vw-bulli_10.jpg" alt="(Credit: Volkswagen)

Bench warmer
With its bench seats, the Bulli can carry up to six people.

Half size
The compact 4C shows typical Alfa Romeo styling, with beautiful curves rising up from the hood of the car and continuing all the way to the rear. The 4C is Alfa Romeo's attempt at an efficient sports car, the model designation being half that of the 8C Competizione.">

Featherweight
In concept form, the 4C shows very few body panel gaps, the whole front of the car is seemingly moulded as a single, solid piece. Alfa Romeo constructed the body out of carbon fibre, which helps keep overall weight down to 875kg.">
<img src="http://cdn.cbsi.com.au/story_media/339310558/60x45/alfa-4c_3.jpg" alt="(Credit: Wayne Cunningham/CNET)

Italian Lotus
At a little over 4 metres, the 4C is longer by about 20cm than the Lotus Elise. Both cars employ lightweight materials and use a mid-engine layout. With 60 per cent of its weight over the rear wheels, the 4C should handle well.">
<img src="http://cdn.cbsi.com.au/story_media/339310558/60x45/alfa-4c_4.jpg" alt="(Credit: Wayne Cunningham/CNET)

Light the way
Although a concept, these headlights are not inconceivable for a production car. The main light is a typical xenon bulb, while surrounding LEDs projected through translucent plastics are not far off from current LED running lights.">

Hideaway
Alfa Romeo hides the door latches in the air intakes, minimising disruption to airflow and aesthetics. The intakes feed air to the engine's turbocharger.">

Unified
The side mirrors show carbon fibre trim and a strip with the colours of the Italian flag. We presume that the 150 celebrates the 150th anniversary of Italy's unification.">

Suspended animation
The front of the 4C features a quadrilateral suspension, while the rear uses MacPherson struts.">

Più veloce!
A turbocharged 1.75-litre direct-injection four-cylinder produces 150kW of power, which is sent to the rear wheels via a dual-clutch transmission. Alfa claims a zero to 100km/h time of under five seconds and a top speed of over 250km/h.">

Ciao!
Supercar-style, the engine is visible under the rear glass. The engine box does not look well insulated from the cabin, so expect some loud Italian chatter.
