The smallest Range Rover ever has a 380W Meridian sound system, voice recognition and DVD playback. Four-wheel drive is standard, for the moment.

In brief

Three trim levels are available across the range: Pure, Dynamic and Prestige.

The Pure features 17-inch alloy wheels, LED fog lights, climate control, push-button start, cruise control, rear parking sensors, a 5-inch display in the instrument cluster and seats trimmed in part-leather and part-polyester. On the road, Hill Launch Assist will make manual driving a little easier, while off-road there’s Terrain Response and Hill Descent Control. The sound system features a 5-inch display, eight speakers, Bluetooth for hands-free and music streaming and audio controls on the steering wheel.

Dynamic models have 19-inch alloy wheels, a sports body kit and detailing, aluminium pedals and other metal finishings on the inside. There’s also an up-spec 380W Meridian audio system with an 8-inch high-resolution touchscreen, 11 speakers and two USB ports.

Prestige variants gain a more restrained exterior, full leather interior with wood highlights, xenon headlights with LED driving lights and the same 380W Meridian sound system. An AU$5900 tech pack for both the Prestige and Dynamic adds navigation with off-road information, a hard disk for storing up to 10 ripped CDs, DVD playback, voice recognition, a powered tailgate and reversing camera.

At launch, all Evoques will come with four-wheel drive, and buyers will have the option of three engines: 110kW (badged TD4) and 140kW (SD4) versions of the company’s 2.2-litre turbo-diesel, and a turbocharged 2-litre petrol engine (Si4) with 177kW of power. A six-speed auto can be had on all engines, while the six-speed manual is only available on diesel engine models. Don’t tell the old man, but the first front-wheel drive Range Rover will became available in early 2012.

Outlook

The base level TD4 Pure with a manual transmission kicks the party off at AU$53,395. The auto transmission is priced at AU$2480, while stepping up to the Dynamic requires an additional AU$13,000 and the Prestige demands a further AU$2000. The same formula applies to the AU$57,395 manual SD4 and the AU$60,395 auto-only Si4.

The Evoque lands in Australian showrooms in November 2011. Two body styles will be available, a five-door wagon and a three-door that’s been cheekily dubbed a “coupe”. Just as cheeky, the sexier, less practical three-door is AU$1500 more expensive than the five-door.

Ferrari 150 Italia
For this year's Formula One World Championship, Ferrari is fielding its 150 Italia race car. In line with this year's rules, the car features a 2.4-litre V8 engine, an adjustable rear wing that it's hoped will improve the likelihood of on-track overtaking and new Pirelli tyres; minimum body weight is pegged at 640kg.

A kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) is fitted that captures otherwise wasted braking energy in an on-board battery pack. A short burst of this energy can then be unleashed via a steering wheel button.">

People everywhere
When parked on the sofa watching a Formula One race, it's all too easy to focus on the individual aspects of the sport - Vettel versus Webber, Hamilton versus Button, Alonso versus everyone else. When milling around an F1 pit lane garage, as CNET Australia was on the practice day for the Australian Formula One Grand Prix, it's clear that a lot more people are involved in something approaching ordered chaos.">

Brothers in arms
Because of their 60 year collaboration, the two companies are especially close. According to Shell, they are the only fuel partner to have a dedicated lab facility in their racing team's F1 garage.">

Mobile lab
Cara Tredget (above), Shell's technology manager for Ferrari, poses in the mobile lab that travels with the F1 team. Compared to our visit in 2009, the lab has been given a facelift, the most noticeable component being the promotional banners along the walls and extra splashes of laboratory-white paint.">

Space constraints
Yes, the lab is as cramped as it looks, although swingable touchscreen monitors and thin Apple wireless keyboards help.">

Peak performance
At any time during a race weekend F1's ruling body, the FIA, can sample fuel from a team's supply drums, preparation rigs or the cars themselves and test it against the pre-approved reference fuel. The team at the Shell lab perform the same sort of tests about 30 times during a racing weekend with a gas chromatography instrument that displays individual components in the fuel as peaks on a graph.">

Grinding away
The rules governing car lubricants aren't as strict as the fuel regulations. This allows engineers and chemists to try new components and formulations, but it also means that the testing procedure is different, too. Samples of used lubricant are put through a rotating disc electrode analyser that can detect minute engine fragments.

Higher than expected concentrations of certain metals may be a sign of excessive wear and tear with a particular part of the engine, an important consideration seeing as teams are limited to just eight engines per driver over the course of the 19-race season, with engines expected to last about 2500km.">

Frequent flyer points
For every race weekend, Shell has three staff members manning the lab, with one dedicated to fuel analysis and one to lubricant analysis.">

And elsewhere...
In addition to the trackside lab, Shell has F1 facilities in the UK, Germany and Ferrari's headquarters in Maranello, Italy.

Checking out the FJ Cruiser at your Toyota local dealership may tell plenty about the car, but it's hard to imagine what it would look like on your driveway, next to your yacht or approaching Machu Picchu. You certainly won't be able to check out all of its components.

Toyota Australia and Rotor Studios have come up with a system that allows the user to explore a virtual car in realistic 3D environment just by waving their arms about. The system comprises of a powerful computer, a 3D projector and a Kinect sensor bar.

If the boffins have their way, a system like the one they've developed could help prospective owners picture their future ride in locales a little more charming than the showroom. It could also help train mechanics with all the elements of the cars and engines that they're tasked with maintaining and fixing.

Check out the video above to see the system in action.

The smallest of the company's "fluidic" sedans, the new Hyundai Accent joins the i20 hatchback late Q3 2011.

In brief

The Hyundai Accent is the smallest canvas to be visited by the company's "fluidic sculpture" styling theme and, to our eyes, the least avante garde. When it goes on sale later this year, the Accent will be the sedan accompaniment to the i20 hatchback.

Features seen on international Accents include a reversing camera that's displayed on the rear-view mirror, climate control, keyless entry and push button start, iPod connectivity, Bluetooth hands-free, steering wheel audio controls, a trip computer with fuel economy info and indicators in the wing mirrors.

Overseas, two petrol engines are offered in the new generation Accent: a 79kW/136Nm 1.4-litre and a 91kW/156Nm 1.6-litre. Also available is a 94kW/260Nm 1.6-litre turbo-diesel. Depending on the engine, the car features a five- or six-speed manual, or a four-speed automatic.

Outlook

The Accent goes on sale late in Q3 2011 after the new Elantra hits the market. Pricing and specifications won't revealed until closer to the official launch.

Outlook

The new Elantra sedan is due in Australia in Q3 2011. Pricing and specifications will be announced closer to its official release.

In brief

At an event to preview the company's new Veloster coupe/hatch, Hyundai revealed a raft of new models that will be coming to Australia in 2011. Amongst them is the new Elantra sedan that will complement the Corolla-sized i30 hatchback.

In Korea, the Elantra comes fitted with a 103kW 1.6-litre direct-injection four-cylinder petrol engine, while in North America a 110kW 1.8-litre engine is the only engine on offer. A six-speed manual or automatic can be paired with either of these engines.

For the home market, the Elantra is offered with a raft of high-tech equipment including automated reverse parking, xenon headlights and LED tail-lights. Features offered in America extends to touchscreen navigation, reversing camera, automatic headlamps, keyless entry and start, and Bluetooth hands-free with voice recognition.

Contrary to predictions that the sedan would be sold as the i35 in Australia, the company is sticking with the Elantra name.

How many doors? Part I
From this side, the Veloster looks like a sporty three-door hatchback in the vein of the VW Scirocco.">

How many doors? Part III
Hyundai says that when the car enters right-hand drive production it will feature two doors on the left (passenger's) side and one on the right (driver's) side; the car on display here is a left-hand drive model, so the configuration is the other way around.">

Please come to Oz!
The display car had a good quantity of tech on board, although with details still being nutted-out none are a definite for Australia.

Inside, there's climate control air conditioning, cruise control, touchscreen navigation, Bluetooth hands-free, voice recognition and a USB port with iPod compatibility.">

At the Sydney Opera House last night, the YouTube Symphony Orchestra wrapped up its 2011 season with a mixture of classical music, improvisation and digital art on the building's sails.

The orchestra consists entirely of musicians who auditioned via video postings on YouTube. While we enjoyed the music immensely, the highlight for us was an appearance from Ukrainian sand artist Kseniya Simonova.

Simonova shot to fame when her performances on Ukraine's Got Talent went viral. YouTube is currently re-streaming the YouTube Symphony Orchestra's 2011 performances at www.youtube.com/symphony, so if you watch and listen for long enough you'll catch her performance.

If you can't quite wait or have a passionate dislike for classical music, check out Simonova's YouTube channel.

Derek Fung attended the grand finale performance as a guest of Hyundai.

When Ferrari launched its latest Formula One car a few weeks back there was a naming furore. Now, in the lead up to the 2011 Melbourne Grand Prix, Aussies will get the chance to get up close and personal with the race car.

One of Ferrari's drivers, Fernando Alonso, will be making an appearance from 11am to 1pm at Melbourne's Federation Square on Thursday, March 24.

Also on display from 7.30am until 2pm that day will be this year's Ferrari F1 car, the 150 Italia, pronounced 150th Italia. Initially its abbreviated name was F150 - the F's a traditional Ferrari car prefix, while the 150 is to highlight the 150th anniversary of Italy's unification into a modern state - until Ford threatened to sue, as this was too similar to the company's ever-popular pick-up truck.

In the end Ferrari abandoned the use of the abbreviation, stating wryly that the name F150 "never has, nor ever will be used as the name of a commercially available product - indeed, there will definitely not be a production run of single-seaters".
