Sharp and NHK have developed an 85-inch LCD compatible with Super Hi-Vision, a next-generation television broadcast format. This is a world first for a direct-view display that features approx. 33 megapixels (7680 x 4320 pixels), or 16 times the resolution of today’s HDTV systems. The new LCD offers a brightness of 300 cd/m2 and 10 bits for each RGB color. This LCD will be shown at the Science & Technology Research Laboratories in Tokyo this weekend. The German photographer Chris Marquardt has managed to come up with a new image rechnology. With the help of scientists from the Max-Planck Institute and the film manufacturer Spürsinn, he has developed a new type of camera system that uses a technology similar to polarization, to amplify the light that forms the image by harnessing ambient light.
