In brief

Audi has revealed its four-door “coupe” that directly tackles Mercedes’ CLS. Fractionally longer and wider than the current A6 sedan, the A7 is shorter and features a hatchback or Sportback in Audi-speak.

A long list of tech kit will be available on the A7 including head-up display, the choice between LED or bi-xenon headlights, climate control air-conditioning, heated and cooled seats with massaging function, radar-guided cruise control, and lane and parking assistance.

Also available is the MMI (Multimedia Interface) entertainment and navigation system that features a high-res pop-up 6.5-inch screen. The system can be controlled by either the familiar MMI knob or a touch pad that can recognise handwriting, as well as swiping gestures.

The nav system can access services from Google with the aid of an internet- and Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone, as well as acting as a Wi-Fi hotspot. A 15-speaker, 1300-Watt stereo set-up from Bang & Olufsen is available for the particularly well healed, although a Bose system is also offered.

At launch in Europe two petrol engines will be offered, a 150kW/280Nm 2.8-litre V6 and a 220kW/440Nm 3-litre supercharged V6, with fuel economy rated at 8 and 8.2L/100km respectively. There will also be two versions of Audi’s 3-litre turbo-diesel V6 on the menu: one producing 150kW, while the other makes 180kW/500Nm. The diesels consume 5.3 and 6.5L/100km respectively.

Power is delivered to either the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission, or all four wheels via seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The wheels range in size from 18- to 20-inch.

Outlook

The A7 Sportback goes on sale in Europe in Q3 2010. Australian sales have yet to be confirmed, but we would expect it to land here some time in 2011.
