One thing occurred to us while we were staring at the model name of Pioneer’s new iPod dock and trying to unlock its meaning. NAV1 … sounds suspiciously like Na’vi. Wait a cotton-picking minute! It’s a James Cameron plot to take over your iPod!

There have been a couple of mini hi-fi sets that have offered iPod connectivity in addition to DVD replay - the LG FB164DAB comes to mind here - but this is something different.

Pioneer first branched out into iPod docks a couple of months ago, and the NAV1 and NAC3 are further additions to this range.

The Pioneer NAV1 is the first iPod dock we can recall that replays DVDs, and, unlike the LG system, it is portable. It’s not an especially squat unit, but Pioneer says it fits comfortably under smaller 26-inch sets. It comes in a choice of black or white.

The dock supports most dock connector iPods and iPhones, and comes with both audio/video support, HDMI 1080p upscaling, CD and DVD playback, as well as a USB input and an FM tuner.

The device also features a USB port that enables playback of WMA, MP3, JPEG and DivX. And, like the LG unit, the Pioneer can rip CDs straight to a USB stick.

The unit features a DVD drive slot at the top, which is flanked by the playback controls. The unit comes with a separate remote, too.

It will be available in July 2010 for AU$399, promising an affordable solution for the young-uns. Look out for CNET Australia’s review soon.
