Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2: Rear-wheel drive supercar leaked

by edit@cnet.com.au (Antuan Goodwin)

If these leaked Lambo photos are to be believed, less is finally more! The Gallardo LP550-2 sports 10 fewer horses and is rear-wheel drive only, but should have tightwads and purists cheering.

Is less more?
The most substantial changes to the rumoured Gallardo LP550-2 happen underneath the sheet metal. A rear-wheel drive powertrain replaces the all-wheel drive system of the LP560-4. Additionally, the 5.2-litre V10 has been detuned to 550 horsepower (410kW), hence the name.

Losing the complex all-wheel drive means the Gallardo LP550-2 should also lose some weight, approximately 30kg.

Despite having less power and less traction, the LP550-2 should be able to keep up with its all-wheel driven brother. Standstill to 100km/h takes an estimated 3.9 seconds, compare that with 3.7 seconds for the LP560-4.

The LP550-2 seems likely to be positioned as a sort of purists' Gallardo and only 250 examples will be made. It should sticker for about 10 per cent less than the LP560-4, although 10 per cent off the $200 grand required is still pretty rich for our blood.
