Facial recognition technology to crack down on fake IDs

New facial recognition technology to be introduced in NSW will make it harder for criminals to get fake licences, the state government says.

Roads Minister Michael Daley said a contractor for the technology is expected to be announced within the next few weeks, with the system up and running later this year.

It will be used in the Road and Traffic Authority's (RTA) identity and external fraud units with the aim to crack down on people obtaining licences illegally.

The technology uses a computer program to verify a person's identity by comparing digital images of human faces by looking at underlying bone structure.

The system then checks it against the images on the database to see if the person is already on the system.

"This means that if someone tries to apply for more than one licence or photo card, the program can be used to catch them out," Mr Daley said.

Mr Daley said official estimates show fraud costs Australians more than $3.5 billion each year.
