Australians are being urged to support members of the Australian Defence Force this Anzac Day by posting a message on a dedicated website or by SMS.

A joint initiative between the Australian Defence Force and Telstra has created the website www.telstra.com/anzacday to enable the messages to be posted.

The aim is for 10,000 messages of support to be received, federal Defence Minister Warren Snowden said.

"It is a great way to remind those serving our country on foreign soil that they are in the hearts and thoughts of Australians on Anzac Day," he said in a statement on Thursday.

Text and picture messages can be sent to 044 SUPPORT (0447 877 678).

The service will operate from 5am (AEST) on Friday, April 24, to midnight on Saturday, April 25.

Standard SMS (text) and picture message charges will apply for ANZAC day messages sent from mobile devices.
