Pentax has just released updated firmware for its K20D DSLR. The update, which takes the camera to version 1.01, addresses the problem characterized on the DPReview forums in which ‘hot’ pixels could appear when the 2-second self times was used.

Sony develops back-illuminated CMOS sensor

Following Omnivision’s recent announcement, Sony today announces the development of a back-illuminated CMOS image sensor (five effective mega pixels, 60 frames/s) with significantly enhanced imaging poperties, including nearly twofold sensitivity and low noise. The new CMOS sensor achieves a signal-to-noise ratio of +8dB (+6dB sensitivity, -2dB noise) in comparison to existing Sony CMOS image sensors of the same pixel size. Canon launches EOS 1000D / Rebel XS

Canon has announced the EOS 1000D, a new entry-level DSLR that slots into the model lineup beneath the 450D. The 10 megapixel digital camera, known as the Digital Rebel XS in the US, takes many of the new features of its big brother and presents them in a lighter, less expensive format that Canon hopes will re-shape the market in the same way as the first Rebel (300D) did. No word yet from Canon US about their intentions.

Canon has today announced an update to its mid-range Speedlite 430 EX flash - the Speedlite 430EX II. The new model offers 20% shorter recycle times, a silent recycle process to minimize distraction and a new quick release and locking mechanism amongst other new features. When attached to an EOS camera the Speedlite 430EX II detects the sensor size and adjusts its angle of coverage accordingly.

In collaboration with engineers from Given Imaging, the Israelite Hospital in Hamburg and the Royal Imperial College in London, researchers from the Fraunhofer Biomedical Engineering Institute have developed the first-ever control system for the camera pill. It can be done with tiny cameras which the patient has to swallow. In the past there was no way of controlling the device as it passed through the body. Now it can be steered and stopped where desired by a handheld magnetic control device. Of course, don’t try this at home…
