photo-i, in association with Canon, is producing a series of DVDs on digital photography. The first to be released is ‘A guide to digital photography’ showing you how to get the best results from your digital camera. The DVD contains a series of assignments and tutorials and pictures are manipulated in Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 (from summer 2006 it will use Photoshop CS).

Olympus has released the second firmware update, version 1.2, for the E-500. This update adds a new menu function to exchange functions of AEL/AFL button. When it comes to digital cameras, the most common complaint that I have heard from people is that their camera is not fast enough. When people talk about the speed of the camera, most of the time they are talking about the time delay between pressing the shutter release and the capturing of the image. Those of us who have been shooting digital for more than a couple of years know that this was a big problem with earlier digital cameras.

There are few subjects I hear more about, when sitting around a table in a bar, with some fellow photographers and a few beers, than the subject of selling our work. In fact, just starting this blog entry sends a shiver down my spine because it is such a huge subject. Where do I start? Or, more to the point, where do I end?

The great shift from film to digital capture over the last five years has transformed the entire picture-taking process in incredible ways. Images are now stored on hard drives, flash memory cards, and discs as electronic files that can be retouched or altered in Photoshop or with other image-manipulation programs.

Olympus has announced a firmware update (version 1.2) for the E-500 (EVOLT) Four Thirds Sytem DSLR. The changes are a new menu function for exchanging the AEL/AFL and One-touch WB buttons, and an improvement in the exposure level of the built-in flash when using certain lenses.

Leica Camera AG has released a new version of firmware for its Digital-Modul-R digital back for the Leica R8 and R9 cameras, but the company notes that users may perhaps wish to hold off on applying the update. Several of Canon’s EOS-series digital SLRs have today received firmware updates from the headquarters of Canon Inc. in Japan. Equivalent updates have yet to appear on Canon USA’s website, but full details and the update files are available in English on Canon Japan’s BeBit site. Leica has today posted firmware update 1.2 for the ten megapixel Digital-Modul-R back for the R8 or R9 SLRs. This update includes improved image display, improved color, compatibility with 4 GB SD cards, compatibility with Mac OS X 10.3, improved Japanese menu and some bug fixes / optimizations. This update can be installed by simply loading the firmware file onto an SD card.

Canon has just released firmware updates for the 1Dn Mark ii, EOS 5D and EOS
30D digital cameras. The 1Dn Mark II gets firmware version 1.0.4 which fixes
an exposure problem with focusing screen Wc-S, and also corrects a problem with
monochrome images. The EOS 5D gets firmware version 1.0.5 which fixes a problem
in which the shutter could not be released using the 5D, 85.1.2 and Speedlite
580 EX combination. The Eos 30D firmware is a re-release of version 1.0.4 to
correct a Chinese language issue.

Canon has today released firmware updates for three of its newest digital SLR’s. The EOS 30D gets firmware update 1.0.4 which fixes some Chinese language display problems, the EOS 5D gets update 1.0.5 which fixes a monochrome image bug and a problem with a combination of the EF 85 F1.2L and Speedlite 580EX, finally the EOS-1D Mark II N gets update 1.0.4 which also fixes a monochrome image bug and also an over-exposure problem when using Focusing Screen EC-S.
